A Greater Manchester Police statement said, “Police were called at 10:05pm on Sunday to reports of a disturbance.

“A woman in her 30s sustained minor injuries but did not require any treatment.

“A 46 year old man was arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault and section 39 common assault.”

The Sentencing Council states that section 47 assault can be intentional or reckless and “must have caused some physical harm to the victim.”

The harm does not need to be serious or permanent, but must “be more than trifling or transient”.

The Sentencing Council also explains that a person is guilty of section 39 common assault “if they either inflict violence on another person - however slight this may be - or make that person think they are about to be attacked.”

Released on bail

The police stated that the man who was arrested “has since been bailed pending further enquiries” and that “enquiries are ongoing.”

Giggs’ representatives said, “Mr Giggs denies all allegations of assault made against him.

Giggs was seen leaving Pendleton police station on 2 November.

Welsh Football Association postponed press conference

The Welsh Football Association postponed a press conference that Giggs was set to attend on Tuesday 3 November, to announce the Wales squad for the upcoming games against the US, Republic of Ireland and Finland.

A statement from the Welsh FA said, “The FAW is aware of an alleged incident involving the men’s national team manager Ryan Giggs.

“The FAW will be making no further comment at this time.”
