A NEW basketball club in Garstang is proving to be a ‘giant’ success with a huge demand from local youngsters.

The Garstang Giants club, which meets at Garstang Academy’s new sports hall, has proved so popular at Under 14 level that it is expanding to now take Under 12s and there are plans to include an Under 16s team by Christmas.

The Giants was formed by Academy PE teacher and Head of Year 10 Gordon Kidd, and operates independently of the school meeting in the evenings and is open to youngsters from all over north Lancashire.

Gordon - a qualified EBA basketball coach - explains that they are the only junior basketball club operating in the area north of Preston and are therefore attracting interest from as far afield as Lancaster.

“We have got something like 32 members at Under 14 level and it’s already one of the best memberships of any club in Lancashire’’ he said. “We’ve got some good coaches coming down and it’s awesome how it has taken off.’’

The club is part of the Lancashire League and play games against teams from places including Preston, Blackpool and Chorley.

Demand has meant Gordon is now putting on free taster sessions for players who may be interested in joining the new Under 12s’ squad, the first one starting tonight, Wednesday, October 19, from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Garstang Academy sports hall.

The sessions are aimed at current Year 6/7 pupils and Gordon stresses the club has a policy of welcoming all players, no matter what their experience or skill level.

Parents are welcome to stay and watch the sessions and enjoy the atmosphere.

Any youngsters who do want to sign up for the club will be registered with the English Basketball Association at a cost of £5. This covers insurance for all registered players for training and fixtures.

The under 12s’ sessions will continue to run from 5.30pm to 7pm on a Wednesday, while the Under 14s train during the same times on a Tuesday night.

“We have got a great nucleus here and obviously, because of my connections and where we train, the majority at the moment are from the high school, but we are open to anyone who is interested’’ added Gordon.

The club are also now sporting smart new kits after the Garstang Country House Hotel agreed to sponsor the team, which Gordon describes as a “fantastic gesture of support.’’
