A promising Garstang footballer is expected to make his international debut with England Under 16s in the upcoming Victory Shield.

Adam Phillips (15) has been named by head coach Kenny Swain in the 18-man squad, who are set to take on Wales at Kidderminster Harriers’ Aggborough Stadium on October 4.

The call-up is a first for the ambitious teenager, currently signed to Liverpool FC and who has made huge strides in recent months, capped by his call up for the under 16s side.

Central midfielder Phillips had just returned from a 10-day tour with the Reds to the Newark Liberty International Soccer Summit in New York when he received the news.

Dad Lee said the chance to play with the Young Lions was a huge boost for his son’s confidence. He said: “He is 15 and currently playing with the under 18s at Liverpool.

“You can never look too far ahead in football, but he is playing well and has impressed the coaches. He is really dedicated, but this has given him the motivation to keep on improving.”

The former St Thomas’s CE Primary School pupil was just four when he started playing, first with Myerscough College before moving to Cadley Boys at Fulwood, Preston.

At the age of eight he took trials for Blackburn and Liverpool, signing for the Lancashire club before moving to the Liverpool Academy three years later.

Lee added: “It’s been quite a step-up for him over the last 18 months. He has moved away from home to try to better balance his schooling and training. It has really helped improve his game – each year, each step is an improvement.

“Liverpool under 18s have started out steady this season. He scored in their game against Chelsea, but unfortunately they lost 4-2.”

The whole family will make the trip to Kidderminster next month as the Young Lions set out to retain the shield.

The shield remains an important competition for Swain and all of the England development team, with a large pool of players selected across the three games and given a chance to impress.

Head coach Swain has overseen England to multiple shield successes and has handed international debuts to a number of players who have gone on to star in the Premier League, such as Danny Welbeck, Jack Butland, Jonjo Shelvey, Daniel Sturridge, Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling.
