Battling performance as injuries and changes take toll

Garstang Yth 0

GARSTANG played last week’s opponents Burscough with several changes due to injury and sickness.

With four first team regulars out, manager Chris Nix was forced to change his formation.

Dan Hall and Phil Jamin got some dangerous crosses, as did Burscough at the other end, but both defences held firm.

On 15 minutes Garstang had to make further alterations as James Gibbins went off with an ankle injury with Harrison Turner dropping back into central defence. On 35 minutes a Burscough through ball was covered by Harrison as Hickson came out to clear. The ball smacked Turner full in the face knocking him to the ground. As the ball ran clear, Matt Ayrton, with some great defending, managed to scramble the ball clear but injured himself in the process.

Turner was led away from the field still seeing stars and Ayrton struggled on. Michael Andrews entered the fray and Garstang managed to get to half time at 0-0.

In the second half, further changes were enforced as Ayrton couldn’t continue, David Hodson replaced him. Turner, now in the land of the living, replaced Andrews. The only goal came when a free kick was given away on the edge of the Garstang box. The wall lined up but the free kick was scuffed and it skimmed around the edge of the wall into the bottom corner.

On 68 minutes, Rob Swales, after working tirelessly up front on his own was replaced by Andrews. Garstang struggled to create any opportunities as injuries and formation changes took their toll. Ian Makinson replaced Alex Swales on 80 minutes as Garstang pressed for an equaliser but it was Joe Hickson making several good saves that kept the score down to one.

Although a defeat, they all should be proud as they all gave 100%. This attitude will soon see them winning games.
