Longridge Town manager Lee Ashcroft believes his team can emulate Fleetwood Town and become the next non-league miracle.

Ashcroft has been buoyed after a successful pre-season and the West Lancashire Football League Premier Division’s August fixtures have just been announced.

Ashcroft’s new-look Town side will open the new season at home against the Crooklands Casuals at the Mike Riding Ground on Saturday August, 9.

And the 41-year-old former Preston North End striker believes the club has the ambition to follow in League One side Fleetwood’s footsteps and climb the football pyramid.

He said: “I joined the club because it has ambition and because it was local.

“I’m still young and I’ve managed at a higher level before but the chairman is ambitious and I am ambitious, hopefully we can have a good season and in the next couple of seasons we are aiming to climb the leagues.

“We don’t have the financial backing that Fleetwood have but we are aiming to reach the next tier and go from there.”

Longridge have had some great pr-season results, they drew 1-1 against Nelson.

They battled hard against last season NPL Division One play-off finalists Bamber Bridge, losing 3-2 at home.

But Ashcroft’s side bounced back to draw 2-2 with his former club Kendal Town last Saturday.

Ashcroft hung up his boots at Kendal and he managed the NPL Division One North side from 2006-2012 and Ashcroft has been pleased with what he has seen from his Longridge side so far.

He said: “I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen so far, we drew 1-1 with a strong Nelson side at home last Thursday and we’ve had some good results.

“It was good to see some familiar faces from Kendal and test ourselves.

“The lads are hungry, I still need to cut the squad down so everyone is fighting for their place.”
