Garstang came out on top in the local derby at Broughton.

Garstang came out on top in the local derby at Broughton.

The first 20 minutes was nip and tuck with both sides creating half chances on a tight pitch with lush grass which made passing the ball very difficult but the first goal came half way through the first half when stand in left back Moss swung in a free kick which found Mullin at the far post and he nodded home from close range.

The goal scorer had to come off a short time later with a turned ankle and Hands made his return to the side which was mirrored by an unfortunate incident on the half hour mark to the Broughton keeper who limped off the pitch.

Garstang started to apply some pressure on the home goal but were indebted to keeper Graham who saved at the feet of the Broughton centre forward and Bevan scrambled the ball to safety.

The goal of the game came just before half time when some slick one touch passing involving five Garstang players down the left flank saw Handley and Roberts combine to play the ball across the six yard box and Murphy gobbled up the chance to make the score 0-2.

The visitors killed off the game early in the second half when firstly Ball got free and although his initial shot was saved the ball fell back at his feet and he laid it Bevan who scored at the second attempt.

Not long after this it was 4-0 when Applegate clipped the ball into Carter and his attempt spooned up to Ball who volleyed home from 6 yards.

McGrath went close on a couple of occasions before Applegate helped himself to a goal when he won the ball on the edge of the box and hit an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

With 20 minutes to go Broughton’s misery was compounded when they had a player sent off although they had their best spell after this as Garstang switched off and Graham was called into action on 3 occasions to make sure they kept a clean sheet.

A solid display by Garstang without reaching the heights of last week but Hofstetter, Hands, Blackburn and Moss kept things tight at the back and Smith put in his usual hard working shift to achieve a satisfying result.
