West Lancs Premier League: Burnley Utd 2 v Garstang 0

A second goal a minute into the second half and a stubborn home defence was enough to repel a 45-minute onslaught by Garstang, who did everything but score.

Neither side had created a chance until Burnley scored in the 13th minute, when Hodgekinson swept the ball out to Wood on his right, and the Burnley striker cut inside before hitting an unstoppable drive into Brindle’s top corner.

Burnley’s goal had not been troubled until Lewis chased a long ball into the home penalty area. Unfortunately for the young striker, he collided with Beck in the home goal and as a result had to be replaced by Panepinto in the 25th minute.

Brindle had to be quick off his line to block Wood’s shot, preventing goal number two.

Garstang had been second to the tackle, but came to life in the 37th minute, Dodd starting a fine interchange of passes with Panepinto and Jack, Dodd’s final header going straight into the hands of Beck, the first sign of a recovery.

In the final minute of the first half, Taylor headed on to the near post from a David Jack throw-in.

However, the visitors were undone in the 46th minute when Wood ran through from what looked like an offside position to crash home a second.

Luck seemed to have deserted Garstang when Fawcett was brought down in the box by Burnley’s last man Thompson, but a free-kick was awarded outside the area and the Burnley man was cautioned.

The resulting Crossley thunderbolt free-kick was blocked, the rebound being repelled again by a very determined Burnley defence.

Beck somehow kept out another effort from Fawcett, as Garstang threw balls into the box.

A Jack throw-in came to the feet of Crossley, but the central defender must have known it was not his team’s day when he saw his shot tipped over the bar by Beck.

The pressure on the Burnley goal was relentless to the end, but somehow the home defence held firm against a Garstang side who perhaps didn’t have enough craft to fashion at least one goal.
