Millom 1 Longridge Town 3
A spirited 10 minutes spell after half-time finally nailed a victory for Longridge Town at the tiny Cumbrian outpost of Millom FC on Saturday.
With many players away on holiday, Town boss Lee Ashcroft was called upon to make changes, especially in defence against their West Lancashire League second division hosts.
Town boss Ashcroft said: “It was always going to be a tough game for us but l’m happy we came through it and managed to win comfortably in the end”.
It was Town who struck first after 20 minutes following a neat move on the right involving Ashcroft, Rick Coar and Jonty McDonald, who found the space and time to slot a neat shot inside the right post.
Town though had hardly begun to enjoy their huge proportion of possession when a harmless cross into their box was spectacularly deflected home by Joe Melling to gift the home team an equaliser on 28 minutes.
Minutes later player/manager Ashcroft powered a shot over the bar when set up by Coar and as the half came to an end Town can thank themselves lucky that Kevin Baldwin in goal was alert to tip a home shot over his goal.
But seconds into the second period and Coar, who was a constant thorn in the home defence was dragged down by the Millom keeper and a grateful Aaron Halliwell slotted home the penalty just seconds after the re-start.
And it was no surprise when on 56 minutes Coar picked his spot coming in from the left to fire a powerful shot across goal into the Millom net.
Town travel to Back Lane Freckleton on Thursday night for their final pre-season build-up game. Kick-off is at 7pm.
