Richardson Cup Round One
Burnley United 1
Garstang played host to Burnley United in the first round of the Richardson Cup.
The Riversiders were a goal down within two minutes but thanks to a Joe Melling brace boosted their cup chances.
Wood had given Burnley the lead when he capitalised on a misunderstanding between James Brindle and Chris Anderson.
It followed an early save from Burnley’s keeper Reid after a shot by Matthew Poole.
Garstang had been on top from the beginning, Poole having another effort deflected for a corner, then Matthew Bell and Aran Helliwell combined well to feed Melling but his dangerous cross was cut out.
Taylor’s shot was blocked as the home team strived for the equaliser which deservedly came in the 29th minute. A move started by Anderson on the left picking out Dodd in the box; Reid blocked the shot but the ball fell to Melling who hammered into the roof of the net.
Garstang had a couple of scares before half time; Brindle bizarrely saving with his head before another block to deny Rodriguez.
Although still on top after the break Garstang weren’t creating the same amount of chances.
Bookings were also given to Burnley’s Yabantu and Scholes for fouls on Dodd just outside the box.
The victory was sealed for Garstang in the 75th minute with a quality display, Taylor allowing a pass from Helliwell to run through his legs to the better placed Melling who side stepped his man before planting the ball into the corner of the Burnley net.
Match sponsors Graham Anthony Associates picked Chris Anderson as their Man of the Match.
