Kirkham Yth 1 Garstang Yth 4

The youth team travelled to Kirkham on the back of last weeks loss at Fulledge and were looking to bounce back and get their first away league win of the season after an impressive team training performance against the seniors in midweek.

Garstang started very slowly and Blackburn was caught out at the back, misjudging a header but the one-on-one from the Kirkham forward was luckily fired wide.

The wake up call for the youth came on 16 minutes when a brilliant volleyed effort screamed into top corner of Graham’s net to put Kirkham 1-0 up.

Garstang quickly responded 3 minutes later with a brilliant finish from Smith that bounced perfectly in his path and his sweet strike found the net after some good link up play between him and Carter.

Carter came close to getting Garstang ahead with a few chances but the keeper stood strong in his way.

The best chance in the first half for Garstang to go ahead came through Ball who found himself in the 6 yard box but his initial shot, and another two rebounds back to him, were all saved by the keeper and the ball was scrambled away to safety.

The second half, much like most of the youth team’s games, was a much better performance.

Early on the Kirkham keeper had to be called into action with shots from Smith and McGrath troubling his goal. Garstang went ahead on 56 minutes when a Carter freekick on the wide left curled into the box and struck the inside of the far post and the ball bounced up perfectly to Bevan to nod home.

The Riversiders were then very much in the driving seat as Kirkham’s counter attacks were cut out by the strong Garstang midfield.

A Smith cross-cum-shot glided over the stranded keeper and struck the bar and a Roberts shot came close to putting Garstang 2 goals ahead.

The 3rd for Garstang came in the 72nd minute when Handley found his glancing near post header from a Carter corner find the back of the net.

The final goal came with 10 minutes to play when a brilliant counter and cross by McGrath down the right looked destined to meet the head of Handley who was powering into the box however Handley cleverly left it to meet the head of Roberts at the far post to settle a 4-1 away win for Garstang.

A good display from the youth team with some brilliant attacking play which they have boasted over the previous weeks.

Hopefully they can carry this form into next weeks Youth Cup away tie against Hoole United.
