While the Lilywhites, who landed no fewer than eight signings last month can't buy or loan any new players until the summer, they could still bring in a free agent or two, should they wish to bolster their squad further.
Here's a look at some of the intriguing options still out there, who could yet be picked up:
5. Ikechi Anya
Released by Derby County at the end of last season, the Scotland international is yet to be snapped up. He's a highly-versatile footballer, capable of playing as a winger or further back the field as a full-back. Photo: Alex Pantling
6. Tom Huddlestone
Another player with bags of Premier League and Championship experience, and a four England caps, Huddlestone could still do a job as a rotation option. He made eleven appearances for Derby County last season. Photo: Justin Setterfield
7. Nathan Dyer
The former Swansea City speedster might not be one to start week in, week out, but he could add a burst of dynamism from the bench here and there, that's for sure. He won the League Cup with the Swans back in 2013. Photo: Luke Walker
8. Marc Pugh
The 30-year-old has made close to 150 Championship appearances with spells for the likes of Hull City, QPR, and most notable Bournemouth, where he played a key role in their 2014/15 promotion to the Premier League. Photo: Laurence Griffiths
