The striker's return to the bench came at the venue where he suffered a serious knee injury in August 2019, one which has required three operations to get him back to full fitness.

Interim head coach Frankie McAvoy made two changes to the side which drew 1-1 with Norwich City at Deepdale on Good Friday, Brad Potts and Ben Whiteman replacing Scott Sinclair and Daniel Johnson in midfield.

Potts scored the 95th minute equaliser against the Canaries after coming on as a substitute.

Sinclair dropped to the bench against his former club, while Johnson missed out through injury.

Also missing from the squad after Friday's game were Anthony Gordon and Sean Maguire, both having picked up injuries during their substitute appearances.

That meant Paul Gallagher who is now part of the coaching staff, and second-year scholar Lewis Coulton were drafted on to the bench.

The skipper's armband went to Ryan Ledson, the midfielder having worn in during the Norwich game when Johnson went on.
