A crowd of more than 120 gathered for a West Lancs Premier League fixture that everyone had looked forward to since the fixtures came out in early July.

It was an intriguing game from the kick off.

Poole steered a good Bell cross wide of the upright on 6 minutes then Hind did well in the Longridge goal fielding a Crossley free kick.

Garstang may have been having plenty of possession but Longridge were showing why they were championship contenders last season.

Baker, Crossley and Benson had to be at their best to withstand the threat of a very potent Longridge strike force of Coar, G.S.Vall and English reducing the visitors attack to half chances.

A clever corner by Anderson to Helliwell at the near post saw the midfielders shot blocked, then a last ditch tackle by Baker was required to bring another powerful run by English to a halt.

Garstang’s best chance so far came at the beginning of the second half when Poole failed to get his head on to a great cross by Draycott.

Although Garstang had made the better start to the half Longridge looked dangerous in attack, Benson doing well to avert danger with Coar bearing down on goal.

Poole mis-hit his shot after being put through by Helliwell, and claimed he had been clipped in the penalty box.

The unlucky striker found himself in another goal scoring position, after Anderson won a crunching tackle, but couldn’t beat the visitor’s keeper. Hinds was in good form again when he went full length to keep out a good effort from Helliwell.

As the last quarter hour approached Longridge upped their game and this time Garstang had to thank keeper Brindle for keeping the score line blank, following great saves from English, twice, and from Carroll.

The game had been a good advert for West Lancs Premier League football played in a competitive spirit by two good sides and a game that neither side deserved to loose.

Garstang’s Glennie failed a fitness test before the game and was replaced with Crossley just back from a three match suspension.

The game was sponsored by Allan’s Bobcat who chose the irrepressible Leon Gierke as their ‘Man of the Match’.
