West Lancashire League Reserve Division 1

Garstang Reserves 2 - Eagley Reserves 0

On Saturday Garstang Reserves entertained Eagley looking to continue their excellent, winning start to the season.

The Garstang team welcomed back Curwen from 1st team cup duty last week, along with Miller and Swindlehurst.

The first half was very even with both sides failing to create some real clear cut chances.

Swindlehurst and Sutcliff produced a number of good crosses from set pieces but nothing that Garstang were able to capitalise on.

Eagley huffed and puffed but, aside from dangerous corners, created nothing of note.

Curwen was in commanding form throughout controlling his area, Miller and Baldwin at the centre of defence sniffed out any Eagley danger.

The game was littered with free kicks for innocuous offences which both teams and spectators alike struggled to understand at times and this did not help the flow of the game.

Half time 0:0.

Garstang started to get into their stride in the second half and were soon on the front foot. Panepinto and Swindlehurst were lively up front and just the final ball was lacking to create a clear chance.

Southward was replaced by the returning Jack from Long term injury and soon Garstang were pressing Eagley deeper and deeper.

The deadlock was broken when Turner was fouled in the box whilst trying to connect with a long through ball.

The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty although this was hotly disputed by Eagley.

Once order had been restored, Taylor stroked home the resulting penalty sending the keeper the wrong way much to the delight of the sizeable home crowd.

There was time for Eagley to try and come back into the game.

Curwen saved well at the feet of the Eagley forward and the Eagley centre half headed wide from a corner with the goal at his mercy.

Manager Bailey made a couple of substitutions with 8 mins to go with a view to shutting up shop with promising youth team players Roberts and Murphy coming on for Panepinto and Turner.

There was just enough time for a super cameo performance by Roberts who flicked a ball beautifully into the path of Taylor who drove into the Eagley box and smashed home from 12 yards and guaranteeing another three points to Garstang.

Final score: Garstang 2 Eagley 0

Garstang had to grind this win out and the team have developed the great knack of doing what is required to win.

That’s now five wins in five games and represents the teams best start to a campaign for years.

There is a no reserve game next week but the team returns to action in two weeks time against one of the leagues best teams, away at Charnock Richard.

Manager Bailey was obviously delighted to maintain the division’s only 100 per cent winning record with the win propelling Garstang into a four point lead, whilst noting Charnock in 2 weeks would represent a much sterner test for this young Garstang side.
