Garstang and Blackpool Wren Rovers needed penalties to separate the sides in their pursuit of the Lancashire Amateur Shield.
The Riversiders played out a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes against the high-flyers of the West Lancashire Premier Division away on Saturday.
Rovers went on to win the third round cup clash 3-1 in the resulting shoot-out.
It was the hosts that dominated early play, Corless denied a scoring attempt in the 14th minute by a quick to react, Baker who dispossessed his man.
But it was Garstang first on the score sheet, two minutes before the break, Melling opening up the “Wren’s” defence with an excellent pass to Fawcett, who fired past Speight in the “Wren’s” goal.
Following the break Garstang were eager to boost their lead. “Wren’s” frustrations were beginning to show when Pickering was booked for having too much to say.
But just after the hour’s play, Garstang failed on more than one opportunity to get the ball away when a penalty was awarded for a trip in the box. Watson converted the resulting kick.
The goal provided the lift to the home team but the nearest they came to a second goal was a good strike by Greenall that flew inches over the bar.
An injury to Fawcett with 20 minutes remaining left Garstang digging deep and Rovers were soon tending to an injury of their own, keeper Speight eventually leaving the field but the away-side could not capitalise on Rover’s misfortune.
It was Helliwell who put away Garstang’s only penalty leading to a disappointing outcome after what had been a very competent performance.
