Garstang’s revival falters

Lostock St Gerards 4, Garstang 1

THIS latest result was a bitter pill to swallow following some recently improved Garstang performances.

After a nervous start Garstang took the lead on 13 minutes when new signing Matthew Swash intercepted a loose back pass from Tinsey before skipping round the keeper and slotting home from an acute angle.

An immediate response by Lostock saw a Sanderson shot skim the outside of the post.

Jack was booked for a late challenge on the diminutive Randell before Lostock were awarded a very dubious penalty when Collins was adjudged to have handled a Brooks header in the box. Parry made no mistake with the spot kick.

The hosts went 2–1 up in the 29th minute when the unmarked Parry headed home a Randell free kick.

Former Garstang centre back Brooks brought down Swash on the edge of the penalty box but the resulting free kick by Swash sailed well over the bar.

An injury to West, who was replaced by Bryson in the 34th minute, was a massive blow to the Garstang cause although the visitors spurned two opportunities to draw level before the break when Edmonds cut inside his man only to see his strike fly over the bar then Jack fired wide after a Brooks header had fallen to him.

A good combination of passes between Collins and Edmonds gave Stone a good chance but the out-of-sorts striker ballooned over.

Poor marking at a corner saw Parry head Lostock’s third goal then Howell had to go full length to keep out a Randell free kick.

Garstang huffed and puffed but couldn’t find any real rhythm. Porter replaced Stone on 65 minutes and Preston replaced previous substitute Bryson who had picked up an injury, none of which could prevent Lostock adding a fourth in the 85th minute with another headed goal, this time by Fisher completed an afternoon of misery that Garstang will quickly want to forget.

There were bookings for Squirrell and for Lostock’s midfielder Randell who had tormented Garstang throughout.

GARSTANG: Howell, Collins, Bardsley, West (rep.Bryson 34 min, rep. Preston 72 min.)) Squirrell, Stutely, Edmonds, Jack, Stone (rep. Porter 65 min.) Swash, Chapman. Sub not used: Kelsall
