West Lancs Premier League
A Sean Paterson goal six minutes from time denied Garstang a share of the points in a hard fought game at the Riverside.
The first chance was a David Round free kick that flew inches over the Garstang crossbar.
Gierke had a good opportunity to put Garstang in front on 14 minutes but he was unable to convert Panepinto’s near post cross. Graham, who had made a good start to the game had to leave the field after a crunching tackle by Round who was booked, Taylor coming on for the stricken young midfielder.
Todd spurned a decent chance shooting wide then Fawcett did well robbing a Vickerstown defender on the edge of his own box but the resulting shot was comfortably saved by Belcher.
Brindle was brought into action in the 37th minute making a smart save at his near post from Imison prior to Garstang’s outstanding opener three minutes later. The goal would have been a contender for the “Goal of the Season” in any league when the industrious Roskell switched play from right to left picking out Fawcett, his first time pass to Gierke was volleyed into the top corner in fine style to give Garstang a first half lead. Before the half time whistle Taylor was unlucky to see his long range effort skim the roof of the net.
Garstang dominated the beginning of the second half during which time Todd hit the side netting after good work by Fawcett and Gierke. Panepinto picked up a booking more out of frustration than anything else.
Vickerstown were unlucky not to be level on the 65th minute when Paterson’s shot was tipped on to one post by Brindle, the ball running across the line before hitting the other post before being cleared.
The visitors didn’t have to wait too long for the equaliser when Round was given the freedom of the box to prod home two minutes later. In Garstang’s first attack following the goal Todd rolled his shot against the post but the visitors had by now taken control forcing Brindle into further saves in chances that fell to Round and Imison.
Much against the run of play Gierke had an opportunity to restore his team’s lead but he shot over.
Injuries didn’t help Garstang’s cause when Fawcett and McGahon had to be replaced by Sutcliffe and Hay.
Patterson notched The Vickerstown winner with only six minutes to go and despite a flurry of action in the Vickerstown goalmouth the home team were unable to force an equaliser. Man of the Match Adam Roskell was booked for his over exuberant efforts in the final stages of a very physical game.
The game was sponsored by Carrs Billington.
