Garstang 1 (5) Lancaster University (0)

Garstang kick started their new season with a 5-0 triumph at home against the Lancaster students.

After a long, tough 2013-14 season, which ended with relegation from Division 2 in the North West League, the Ladies 1sts are ambitious to promptly get back to regional hockey.

Garstang pressed high from the off and within 2mins the frontline had forced a defensive error from LU which enabled Diane Roe to intercept a ball and force the keeper to save, only into Fran Summers’ path who made no mistake from the top of the D. In the last 15mins of the first half, Garstang allowed LU into the game with unforced errors and were under pressure themselves.

The defence rode the pressure out and Garstang earned a penalty corner in the last few minutes.

Lyndsey Hayes finished with aplomb giving them a 2-0 cushion. Garstang refocused and started the second half quickly. Their pressure soon paid off when Hayes earned her brace from yet another set piece.

A nice team move saw the fourth, which finished with Diane Roe driving down the right into the D only to lay off for Alice Matthews to finish first time into the net.

Returning striker Catherine Godbold claimed her first of the season late on to seal a comfortable and solid 5-0 victory.

The Ladies 2’s faced Pendle Forest away with plenty of pressure in Pendle’s area, the goal alluded them and they faced the infuriating scenario of conceding in the last few minutes.

The once more formed Ladies 3’s had their first league fixture cancelled late on against Lancaster 5’s, they will see their first fixture away against Chorley and Leyland 2’s this Saturday.
