Garstang 1

Garstang first team travelled away over the weekend at Belle Vue, Manchester. The already late start turned into an even later start with a delayed game ahead of Garstang’s match.

After the inescapable prolonged pre-match preparations Garstang got back to the job in hand and started playing hockey. The irregularities did nothing to dampen Garstang’s spirits and they started with gusto. Didsbury Greys (DG) – currently top-of-the-table–were clearly an organised side but when Garstang pressed, they forced errors at the back and were able to carve some slim openings of their own.

Despite this positivity it was DG who took the lead with a dangerous forward who dribbled into the D and finished close range.

The second goal came in similar fashion and soon after 20 minutes into the half. The back line of Sarah Skelton in goal, Niki Oddie, Debs Huyton, Lindsay Norton (captain) and Donna Richardson were doing a fine job under a lot of pressure.

Garstang kept fighting and early into the second half made good use of their pressure when Josie Rice picked up the ball in midfield and played a long ball up to Fran Summers who weaved into the D and finished on the left side.

DG then showed their strength with great tactical play and continual rotation of substitutions. Garstang just could not match this with an already depleted and tired squad. Garstang gave up possession too easily and were frequently chasing the game.

DG scored three goals within 15 minutes of each other, both open and set plays. Despite the heavy scoreline Garstang gave their all and were fighting until the final whistle, ending the game with pressure on DG’s goal.
