Garstang 2nds 2

Lancaster 1

Garstang 2nd XI started their first home match of the new season against Lancaster Nomads with several new players, having lost three seasoned campaigners and a promising junior at the end of the previous season.

Lancaster are always a well organised adult side and had recently beaten Garstang in a friendly match.

Garstang started well and after advantage had swung to and fro for the first 10 minutes gained a degree of advantage with their quality passing game backed by the strong defence of Megan Ditchfield (captain) in goal with defenders Eileen Smith, Gemma Livesey, Vicky Bradley and new youngster Ellie Moss at left back.

In the centre the experienced firm of Caroline Hampson, Julie Nightingale, Caroline Hampson, Emma Sanderson and Helen Mather were playing well and frustrating Lancaster.

After 10 minutes Garstang won their first corner and a good shot went just wide of the Lancaster post.

A loose ball from outside the Dee on 18 minutes hit the post of the Garstang goal and bounced back perfectly for a Lancaster forward who gleefully guided it home to open the scoring, 0 -1.

Garstang came back hard but bad luck and a good performance from the Lancaster keeper kept them ahead. Lancaster also had their chances but faced a determined defence led by an in-form Megan.

At the start of the second half Garstang allowed Lancaster to dominate them for about 10 minutes despite the introduction of the power of Fran Summers. Fran was ably supported by junior speed birds Nicky Charter, Jemimah Dewhurst and new youngster Olivia Huyton. After 18 minutes Fran cut loose and scythed through the Lancaster defence, led the keeper a dance and neatly slotted the ball home, 1-1.

Fran came off and new player Olivia Mason returned as Garstang went up a couple of gears dominating Lancaster and holding the ball in their opponents’ half.

The minutes ticked by and towards time a series of penalty corners for both sides went unrewarded with a quality Garstang slip just missing a neat deflection into goal.

With 28 minutes gone Garstang made a good break and after a save by the Lancaster keeper Nicky opened her account for the season with a neat point blank goal, 2 -1.

This was a quality start to the season for a new Garstang side with all players putting in a good performance.
