Garstang Table Tennis Club member Kelly Southward has been chosen to represent the North West at the Sainsbury’s 2013 School Games to be held in Sheffield, between September 12-15.
The school games is a multi-sport event for the UK’s elite young athletes of school age with 1600 athletestaking part in 12 different sports including table tennis, swimming, athletics, gymnastics and badminton at eight different venues, supported by 700 coaches and volunteers.
Kelly gained her place by being one of the four highest ranked girls in the region and she will compete against other teams from England as well as Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
Garstang Table Tennis Club celebrated another amazing season on Saturday with a packed presentation evening at Winmarleigh Village Hall when Martin Ireland from the English Table Tennis Association presented the prizes including the Player Of The Year Award which was won by Alice Dillon for her amazing achievements over the past 12 months.
In March she was part of a team from Greatwood Primary School which won the Under 11 National Championships in Hinckley; in April, she represented England at the Primary Schools’ International in Dublin; she then went on to finish runner-up at both the Schools’ Individual Championships in Doncaster and the 11-14 National Championships at Walsall in June.
Due to her success at the 11-14 National Championships Alice will represent England at the Mini-Cadet European Championships in Strasbourg. Alice was presented with the Phil Sherriff Memorial Trophy by Martin, who also gave out the following awards: Young Volunteer – Stuart Southward, Volunteer – Val Southward, Most Promising Player – Owen Pye, Most Improved Player – Megan Dillon, Garstang Community Academy Player Of The Year – Millie Partington.
Team of the Year – Garstang D (Owen Bendall, Tommy Kennedy, John Allen and Mike Charters).
Alice will be in action again this week playing in the International Youth Games in Lancaster alongside club mates Tommy Kennedy and Will Humphries and her sister Megan.Table tennis coaching continues at Garstang through the summer in preparation for the new season which starts in September. There are sessions for beginners and more experienced players of all ages so if you fancy having a go please do.
Adult sessions are 6.45pm to 7.45pm on Mondays at Garstang Community Academy and for primary aged school children they are 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Thursdays at Garstang Community Academy.
