Garstang CC’s first XI had a mixed weekend with cup victory on Sunday following league defeat a day earlier.

Mark Walling’s players booked their place in round two of the Northern League’s 40-over cup with a 48-run victory against Morecambe on Sunday.

Morecambe had won the toss at the Riverside and chose to field first.

It looked a good decision when Liam Moffat and Louis Backhouse removed Michael Walling (1) and Dan Curwen (4) respectively.

However, Michael Wellings and Mark Walling began to rebuild the Garstang innings.

Wellings top-scored with 95 before falling victim to Lewis Smith, while Mark Walling hit 38 before he was dismissed by his Morecambe counterpart Ryan Pearson.

He was one of five wickets for the Morecambe captain, who also accounted for Tom Wells (25), Danny Gilbert (12), Joseph Pearson (9) and Greg Bishop (0) in taking 5-31.

It meant Garstang were all out for 224 but they were still able to dismiss their opponents for 176.

Alex Briggs led their reply with 42, while Luke Pearson (28), Charlie Swarbrick (25) and Lewis Smith (26 not out) all made starts.

The wickets were shared around with Adam Ball taking 3-33 and two apiece for Wells (2-19) and Michael Walling (2-37).

Gilbert had picked up the first wicket to fall, that of Jamie Heywood (0), while Bishop (1-35) and Joseph Pearson (1-26) claimed the others.

The win means they now face Netherfield in the last eight after they saw off Fulwood and Broughton by 44 runs.

Saturday had seen Garstang unable to make it two wins from two in the league after going down by 33 runs against Blackpool, again at the Riverside.

The visitors had chosen to bat first and reached 194-7 at the end of their 50 overs.

Gilbert again struck early for Garstang, removing Tomas King (0) before Sam Dutton and Ciaran Johnson added 97 for the second wicket.

Dutton fell for 54 and Johnson for 37, both to Michael Walling (2-44), before Brett Pesler (2-30) dismissed Sagar Trivadi (5) and Josh Boyne (11) to leave Blackpool 114-5.

Jake Muncaster (42) and Ben Howarth (24) put on 53 before they were out to Waris Khan (1-36) and Gilbert (2-54) respectively.

Garstang’s replay began in disappointing fashion as they lost both openers early on.

Michael Walling (1) and Wellings (5) were both out cheaply, falling to Trivadi and Matt Grindley respectively as Garstang were reduced to 11-2.

Pesler (52) and Mark Walling (27) added 76 for the third wicket but the former’s dismissal triggered a spell which saw four wickets fall for 17 runs.

Matthew Siddall picked up two of them, Mark Walling and Dan Curwen (8), while Boyne dismissed Pesler and Gilbert (1) fell to Trivadi.

That left Garstang 104-6 before Siddall struck again to remove Mark Winstanley (1).

Matt Crowther and Ben Woodruff added 40 for the eighth wicket before the end came quickly.

Grindley saw off Crowther (21) and Khan (0), while Trivadi removed Thomas Speake (1) to leave Woodruff 27 not out and Garstang all out for 161.

Boyne took 1-35 but the damage was done by Trivadi (3-28), Siddall (3-34) and Grindley (3-37).
