Garstang Hockey Club is opening its doors this month with the aim to get more women back playing hockey.

The club is supporting the Back to Hockey and Sport England’s ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, part of a national programme encouraging people to enjoy the sport.

A Back to Hockey programme is running every Thursday until June 15 6.30pm -7.30pm from the club’s base at UCLan Sports Arena in Cottam, Preston.

The informal sessions are designed for women who want to get back into fitness but may not have played hockey for a number of years, along with those who want to play for the first time.

Garstang Hockey Club’s Josephine Rice said: “Women will be able to pick up their sticks and discover fitness, fun and friendship through relaxed and informative sessions.

“They can learn new skills and discover how to play from scratch before putting it all into practice with bite-size games.”

Beverley Blackburn, England Hockey’s participation manager and hockey coach of seven years, said: “It’s an exciting time to come back to hockey as so many women have been inspired by the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and want to give the sport a try in their back garden.

“We welcome all abilities and are keen to show that hockey has come a long way from the days of muddy pitches and waiting around for a touch of the ball!

“The Back to Hockey sessions are also aimed at those who played during their school days but may have moved away from the game because it became too time consuming, competitive and physically demanding.

“Now back for another successful year, the flexible format allows women get involved in the sport on a local basis and can fit easily around busy schedules.”

Women and girls aged 7+ interested in having a go at hockey as well as our junior and development players are welcome. The sessions are at UCLan Sports Arena, Cottam from 6.30pm-7.30pm and are £3 per session.
