Never say die attitude evident in friendly
Sunday saw the Garstang Ladies rugby team welcome Ormskirk Ladies to Hudson Park in a friendly.
The opening exchanges saw a well organised Ormskirk dominate territory and their winger sped in at the corner to open the scoring. From the restart, Garstang fronted up but Ormskirk were very good at punishing defensive lapses and scored a repeat of their first try. The amount of defensive work Garstang had to do was taking its toll and they were unable to control the ball and could not get out of their half. As Ormskirk went through the phases their centre chipped over the top and was beating fly half Emma Dobson in a foot race until Dobbers decided to fly in and almost drowned her opponent in the biggest puddle on the field. Unfortunately the Ormskirk player didn’t have the ball and the ref deemed Emma’s tackle illegal and awarded a penalty try.
Ormskirk had amassed a well deserved lead but the ladies have developed the Garstang habit of never giving up. Ormskirk did manage to get over the line with lots of good play, their offloading was outstanding and exploiting gaps in the Garstang defence, but Emma Barton, Sarah Wrathall, Amy Hall, Dawson and O’Sullivan among others put their bodies on the line to keep the score down. Half time came and the score was quite a lot - 0, but not a drubbing by any means. The second half begun with Garstang looking more confident. With the forwards holding their own in the scrums and the backs hitting strong lines, territory and possession was starting to swing Garstang’s way. Ormskirk were being bullied in the tackles and strong running by Barton, German and Vicki Gardner kept the visitors under pressure. But they grabbed another try in the corner after a kick through and the game as a contest was over.
Garstang kicked off and after thunderous hits in defence turned the ball over and bashed their way over halfway, with Hindle controlling at the breakdown, strung a few phases together with big powerful runs from Amy Kelsall and Barton again set up a ruck on Ormskirks 22 from which Hindle fired a pass to Dobson who drew the defenders to her and popped to the onrushing skipper German on the switch catching the defence cold and bulldozed her way through and over the line for a fantastic and totally well deserved try which sent the huge crowd wild. This was no doubt try of the season so far. The conversion slipped wide and the score was quite a lot - 5! Final play was called and Ormskirk shipped the ball across the backline to their winger who rounded the day off with a very well taken try.
