SHIRESHEAD’S young cricketers are celebrating a silverware double – with one of their bowlers marking the Under 12s’ victory with a remarkable five wicket haul taken in just one over!
Joe Oliver, 11, ripped Kendal’s middle order apart in the Sedgwick knock-out final as he took wickets with five of his six balls in a magical maiden over, to set up the platform for a comfortable win.
And Shireshead’s under-14s had an equally impressive result as they lifted the Westmorland League knock-out cup, defeating Netherfield.
In that game Shireshead won the toss and inserted Netherfield, with the bowlers immediately finding the right length to bowl.
The Netherfield batsmen struggled to come to terms with the swing of openers Will Brayfield (2-3) and Luke Bray. Excellent fielding and heroic wicket keeping from Fabian Satchwell-Hirst alongside 12 overs of accurate spin-bowling from Rowan Upton and Mark Bevan meant the Netherfield batsmen struggled to find any freedom to score quickly. Their fate was complete with the introduction of Jonathan Seddon (1-0) and the return of Bray (3-8) whose wickets brought the innings to a premature end in the 27th over for a below-par 58.
In reply the Shireshead openers began cautiously, losing skipper Owain Houghton with the score on 10, and with the loss of semi-final hero Gareth Bleasdale before the score had reach 20, Netherfield may have thought they had a chance, but man of the match Bray and Nick Phillips (6) batted with freedom, taking the game away from Netherfield. Luke retired on (35no) when the score was on 52.
However, what came next was the legendary Shireshead Wobble, four quick wickets, and at 54-6, it was left to the cool head of Bevan to stroke a four to the cover boundary and scramble a single off the next ball to complete a comprehensive cup final victory with the wide margin of 11.2 overs to spare.
This win continues Shireshead Under-14s remarkable season of 12 games unbeaten. Their next and final game of the season will be to decide the Westmorland League Under-14s Championship at Warton CC on Sunday, September 4. As the Southern Division Champions, Shireshead will once again take on Netherfield CC (Northern Division Champions) for the League title.
