Coppull Utd 3, Garstang 1

GARSTANG are still in search of their first victory of the season following this latest defeat at Coppull.

Four new players were in the Garstang squad plus the welcome return of Gareth Lewis from Squires Gate.

The visitors were on the back foot from the kick off and were lucky not to be a goal down after only five minutes when Greg Brickell shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Although well on top, it was somewhat fortuitous when Coppull opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Brickell’s shot was half blocked by Collins, the ball deflecting over the hands of Howell.

Edmonds, who had had a torrid opening 20 minutes, was then booked for a perfectly good tackle.

Garstang’s attacks lacked any penetration, the nearest they had come to a goal was a good run and cross by Lewis but there was no one there to put the ball in the net.

A serious injury to Garstang midfielder Matty Poole caused a 32 minute delay waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

New signing Asa Stone replaced the unfortunate Poole when play resumed. A good spell ensued for Garstang, firstly a dangerous free kick by Bryson eluded everyone them Lewis brought a good save out of home keeper Walsh.

Hearts and minds visually sank in the 37th minute when Brickell headed home a near post corner to put the home team two up.

Stone did well when he wriggled his way past two defenders in the box but his cross was hacked away.

The second half brought an early booking for Squirrell for a foul on Brickell, the Coppull striker also earned a booking in the same incident.

Howell was then forced into a decent save from the ever dangerous Brickell.

In the 58th minute Bryson limped off to be replaced by Kelsall. Stone was providing Garstang with some spark. A great cross field ball from him to Lewis saw the Garstang’s striker shot well saved. There was more trouble for Garstang when Jack had to with draw through injury and was replaced by Jones.

Coppull’s keeper Walsh contributed to his side’s eventual win with another good save from Stone before the game was put out of Garstang’s reach when Brickell completed his hat trick robbing Still in the box before slotting the ball past Howell in the 75th minute.

To Garstang’s credit they didn’t give up and were rewarded with a Squirrell penalty. The Coppull keeper Walsh had to make saves from Stone, twice and Kelsall before the final whistle.

Although another defeat Manager Thomas must take some positives out of this game, the return of Lewis, an impressive debut from Stone and the fact that he was without the services of star midfielder West must give him and the Garstang faithful some optimism for the future.
