On a glorious summer day Longridge 1st XI entertained defending Palace Shield Champions Vernon Carus.

With both sides in great form the pre-match build up promised an entertaining clash.

Ian Simpson won the toss and decided to bat and accumulate a sizable total in the baking conditions.

Things could not have got off to a worse start with both Dan Wilkinson Jnr and Luke Platt caught out and bowled in the first over. Holden soon followed to leave the home side in tatters at 0 for 3.

Longridge never recovered and only Max Nelson (12) and debutant Declan Fitzhenry (20) offered any kind of resistance to the Vernon’s attack lead by Paul Hayton and Ben Llewellin.

The home side crumbled to 60 all out with Hayton finishing with 5-30 and Llewellin 4-25.

Longridge took to the field knowing quick wickets was their only way back into the game but at the same time couldn’t afford to give any boundaries away.

Ian Simpson and Roger Kaye opened the bowling and picked up a wicket each before Rory McDowell came on and instantly made an impact. Four quick wickets reduced Vernon’s to 40-6 and gave Longridge a sniff of victory. Wes Royle and Paul Chapman Jnr however steadied the visitors’ nerves and saw them home to victory by four wickets.

The game was very kindly sponsored by Procters Cheeses.
