The Grimsargh Players will be entertaining audiences, as well as celestial beings, with their much anticipated November production of Entertaining Angels.

It is a very funny play by Richard Everett, published in 2009.

It will be directed by Alan Clayton and star well-known talent Jane Rawkins as well as favourite Grimsargh actors Kath Longworth, Laura Harrison, Paul Lansom and newcomer Jenny Miller.

Entertaining Angels, a modern comedy, has all the right ingredients to make you think as well as laugh.

Grace, the late vicar’s wife, is trying to make sense of her new existence as a widow – and the necessity of leaving her home, the vicarage.

Her daughter Jo, and missionary sister Ruth, are ostensibly there to help her, but both women are entertaining problems of their own.

So too, is the new vicar, who is due to move in while trying to assist Grace in coming to terms with her loss.

But the only person Grace is intent on communicating with is her dead husband Bardy, who wanders through the garden just the same as he ever did – in Grace’s eyes, at least.

Gentle pathos seems to be the order of the day, but then we find out the real reason Ruth has returned after 30 years’ absence.

She is not offering comfort at all, in fact, what she reveals is enough to call into question Grace’s faith in everything about her life, including God.

Entertaining Angels never forgets it is a comedy and the meaning of love is explored in a witty, engaging way that makes the audience smile along with the characters as they take wobbly steps to self-awareness.

Entertaining Angels will be performed at Preston Playhouse on Market Street West from Wednesday November 21 to Saturday November 24.

Curtain up is at 7.30pm, and there is free parking opposite from 7pm and a licensed bar.

The Players can date their formation to 1927.

However, it was in 1947 that the Grimsargh Players as we know them today were formed.

Moving to the Playhouse Theatre in 1952 they now stage productions in November and March each year.

The active membership includes members not only from Grimsargh but also from Longridge, Fulwood, Ribbleton, Bamber Bridge and further afield.

New members are always welcome.
