Lancaster wakes up to Octagon revived classic next week

A funny, ground-breaking drama set at the end of a Lancashire Wakes weekend, just before the outbreak of the First World War, arrives at The Dukes in Lancaster next week.

Hindle Wakes famously centres on a millworker’s holiday fling with the mill-owner’s son and the ructions it causes.

Written in 1912, it was one of the first plays to have a working class woman as its central character and was considered hugely controversial when first performed.

The highly-praised Bolton Octagon production points up the role of women as they embarked on a new era of independence and reflects on class differences.

The play runs from March 24-28 and is performed in The Round, directed by the Olivier award-winning David Thacker, a one-time director at The Dukes.

There will be a chance to meet and question David, currently artistic director at Bolton, both before and after the show on March 24.
